Therapeutic ClassOxazolidinone Antibiotic
Max / 24h200 mg
Common Dose200 mg once daily for 6 days (ABSSSI)
PregnancyUse only if benefit outweighs risk
Indications ▼
Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) caused by Gram-positive pathogens including MRSA
Off-label use: complicated skin infections, when standard therapy is unsuitable
Mechanism & Pharmacokinetics ▼
Mechanism: Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing formation of the initiation complex.
Pharmacokinetics: High oral bioavailability (>90%), metabolized in the liver via phosphatase-mediated conversion to active tedizolid. Half-life ~12 hours. Excreted mainly in feces, minimal renal excretion.
Dosage & Administration ▼
| Condition | Recommended Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| ABSSSI (Adults) | 200 mg | Once daily for 6 days (PO or IV) |
Note: Can be administered orally or intravenously. Adjustments in mild/moderate hepatic impairment may not be required; avoid in severe hepatic impairment.
Side Effects ▼
Nausea, headache, diarrhea
Vomiting, dizziness
Rare: thrombocytopenia, anemia, peripheral neuropathy
Possible reversible elevation of liver enzymes
Contraindications ▼
Hypersensitivity to tedizolid or other oxazolidinones
Use with caution in patients taking serotonergic drugs (risk of serotonin syndrome)
Drug Interaction ▼
SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors: risk of serotonin syndrome
Linezolid: additive MAO inhibition
Warfarin: monitor INR, possible minor interaction
Pregnancy & Lactation ▼
Use only if benefit outweighs risk (Category C)
Excretion in breast milk unknown; weigh benefits vs risks
Clinical / Research Summary ▼
Therapeutic Role: Effective oxazolidinone for Gram-positive infections, including MRSA, in ABSSSI.
Clinical Effectiveness: Non-inferior to linezolid; shorter treatment duration (6 days vs 10 days).
Safety Profile: Well tolerated; monitor hematologic parameters in prolonged therapy.
Current Research: Use in multi-drug resistant infections and comparison with newer antibiotics in skin infections.
Patient Counseling Points ▼
Take exactly as prescribed; do not skip doses
Report signs of allergic reactions, unusual bleeding, or neuropathy
Avoid concurrent serotonergic medications unless advised
Complete full course even if symptoms improve
