Mechanism & Pharmacokinetics ▼
Mechanism: Metabolized to bicarbonate, increasing urinary pH and reducing urinary calcium excretion. Enhances citrate excretion which binds calcium, preventing stone formation.
Pharmacokinetics: Rapid oral absorption; metabolized in liver to bicarbonate. Excess potassium excreted via kidneys. Onset within hours; urinary alkalinization maintained with regular dosing.
