Gestodene 0.075 mg + Ethinyl Estradiol 0.02 mg / 0.03 mg

Generic Name: Gestodene 0.075 mg + Ethinyl Estradiol 0.02 mg / 0.03 mg
Therapeutic Class: Combined Oral Contraceptive (COCP)
Indications
This combination is primarily used for:
  • Oral Contraception: Prevention of unintended pregnancy.
  • Cycle Regulation: Management of irregular menstrual cycles.
  • Dysmenorrhea: Relief of painful menstruation.
  • Acne Treatment: In women seeking contraception, it can help reduce moderate acne.
Presentation
Tablet: Usually available in a calendar pack of 21 active tablets. Some packs include 7 placebo/iron tablets (28-day pack).
Description
This combined pill works primarily by suppressing gonadotropins, which **inhibits ovulation**. Additionally, it alters the cervical mucus (making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus) and changes the endometrium (reducing the likelihood of implantation). Gestodene is a highly potent progestogen with a favorable safety profile regarding metabolic impact.
Dosage & Administration
  • 21-day pack: One tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day tablet-free interval.
  • 28-day pack: One tablet daily for 28 consecutive days without any break.
  • The first tablet should be taken on the first day of the menstrual cycle.
  • It should be taken at the same time each day (e.g., after dinner or before bed).
  • Missed Dose: If a dose is missed by less than 12 hours, contraceptive protection is not reduced. If more than 12 hours, backup contraception (e.g., condoms) may be needed.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, breakthrough bleeding (spotting), and mood changes. A serious but rare risk associated with all COCPs is Venous Thromboembolism (VTE).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Strictly contraindicated during pregnancy.
Lactation: Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers until the child is fully weaned, as estrogens can reduce the quantity and quality of breast milk.
Precautions & Interactions
Contraindications: History of thrombosis (DVT/PE), severe liver disease, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, and smokers over age 35.
Interactions: Liver enzyme-inducing drugs (e.g., Rifampicin, Carbamazepine) may reduce its efficacy. Some antibiotics may also temporarily interfere with its effectiveness.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
