Mechanism & Pharmacokinetics ▼
Mechanism: Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent that softens and exfoliates the stratum corneum, reducing hyperkeratosis and promoting desquamation. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties.
Pharmacokinetics: Minimal systemic absorption with topical use; metabolized to salicylates in small amounts. Excreted primarily in urine if systemically absorbed.

Open wounds or mucous membranes (relative)
Children under 2 years (risk of toxicity)
Drug Interaction ▼
Concurrent use of other topical salicylates: risk of additive irritation
